Wicklow town is the county town. It has a fine harbour, fine sandy beaches to the south, and the shingle beach, which is excellent for shore angling and bird watching, is to the north. Wicklow town makes an ideal centre for touring the area. To the west of the town centre are the ruins of a 13th century friary, and the Protestant church dates from the 18th century. It occupies the site of earlier site from Medieval times, of which the only remaining part is the 12th century Romanesque doorway. Wicklow Gaol, now a Visitor Centre dates from 1702 and housed many prisoners during the Penal Laws. There is a monument in Fitzwilliam to Captain Halpin, a native of Wicklow who was the captain of the ship which laid the first Transatlantic cable.
